Q&A with Mike
As part of the ongoing Volunteer Spotlight series, we checked in with volunteer Mike Williams on why he chooses to donate his time and energy to Alphapointe.
Tell us about you…
I became involved with Alphapointe through my previous employer UnitedHealthcare. We were the first presenting sponsor of Alphapointe’s Dining in the Dark event. I recently concluded my term on the Governing Board and as Chair of the Services Committee, but I remain a member of the Foundation Board.
Why do you volunteer at Alphapointe?
Actually, I really enjoy being around and helping those among us who require a little more help. I find them fun to be with and enjoy getting to know them. I also enjoy the Staff at Alphapointe and appreciate everything they do improve other people’s lives.
What does volunteering at Alphapointe do for you?
After volunteering at an event, I reflect on the time spent there and on the families and other volunteers. I am amazed at their positive attitudes and dedication and think a lot about the struggles that people who are blind go through daily. I also see their kindness and generously giving of their time towards others and find that very humbling.
What do you take away when you leave Alphapointe?
I think about the people we serve and that no matter where we come from in life or how we currently live, we all have the same basic desires: wanting to be appreciated, respected, welcomed and to be a part of a community. There’s so much that each of us can do to make the world a better place and it really does start with one person at a time. Every one of us has the time to do more!
Why should others get engaged with Alphapointe?
To make life better for those less fortunate. This can be done by giving of your time or simply making a donation that goes towards the services that Alphapointe provides to the visually impaired children and adults citizens in our community.
