Mission Moment: Overcoming Challenges with Optic Neuropathy
Pat is a senior living with a recent diagnosis of optic neuropathy, a condition which damages the optic nerve affecting all aspects of vision. Pat came to Alphapointe’s Low Vision Clinic where she was referred to an occupational therapist to assess her needs. She received follow-up in her home to improve her independence with desired daily activities.
Her main areas of difficulty were phone accessibility, identifying canned goods and locating food on her plate when eating. She received training on how to use phone with talking keys to communicate with increased ease. Pat learned how to utilize a PenFriend labeling system where she can now identify desired foods and products. She also received training on proper eating techniques in order to locate food on her plate with increased accuracy.
Pat is grateful for the help she received from Alphapointe. She feels that she can remain living in her home independently now that she has the right tools.
