Mission Moment: Macular Degeneration Can’t Stop Independence

Judy has age-related macular degeneration, the leading cause of vision loss in older adults. Macular degeneration affects one’s central vision and causes “blind spots” that make it difficult to read, recognize faces and engage in many other activities.

Judy began receiving training through Alphapointe’s Senior Adult Services Program earlier this summer. An individualized program was developed from her initial evaluation to maximize her independent living skills. Judy and Alphapointe’s occupational therapist collaborated to develop a plan of care that catered toward her individual goals. Judy was eager to learn new techniques for accomplishing a variety of tasks as well as becoming familiar with adaptive equipment that assists her in remaining independent.

Judy received training in meal preparation techniques and was provided with recommendations for different aids to increase her visual access and allow her to cook with increased safety. She obtained a digital magnifier that allowed her to read small print and complete writing tasks more easily. Judy was also put in touch with various community resources such as transportation options and Wolfner Library in Jefferson City, Mo., which has a collection of talking books.

Since engaging with Alphapointe, Judy has continued to be independent and active. She feels that Alphapointe provided her with the training and tools to ease the frustration in her life due to vision loss and increased her confidence.
