Mission Moment: Macular Degeneration Can’t Stop Carla
Carla Rhines is a senior living with age-related macular degeneration, a condition affecting the central part of the retina (the macula) and resulting in distortion or loss of central vision.
Carla was referred to Alphapointe’s Low Vision Clinic where she received an evaluation by the low vision optometrist and occupational therapist. She then received follow up training in her home from the occupational therapist to improve her independence with daily activities.
Her greatest difficulties were identifying spices in the kitchen, phone accessibility and sewing. She received training on how to use a labeling device to identify all spices/seasonings in her kitchen to improve meal preparation. She received training on how to utilize the accessibility features of her phone and ipad to make calls/texts and read messages with increased ease. She also received demonstration and training on a variety of optical devices to increase her participation in sewing tasks.
This has been a great relief for her and her spouse. Carla is thankful to have worked with the Alphapointe team to improve her independence with the daily activities that mean so much to her that she had been struggling with.
During her last visit, she shared, “I appreciate all you have done. You helped me with so much.”
